A Kairos Moment: Change is Coming Soon

Kairos is an ancient Greek term connoting time when old structures are breaking down and movements for change are breaking through, when there’s a decisive opportunity to achieve justice, peace and equality. In a moment of climate chaos, systemic racism and violence, poverty and inequality, militarism and war, and the rise of white Christian nationalism, possibilities for peace and justice seem far away. Yet our faith traditions insist that justice is possible and necessary and change is coming soon. In this Kairos moment, explore what the Bible and our faith traditions really say about poverty and justice and learn from examples of poor and low-income communities organizing for change.

This 90-minute webinar is free and open to the public. It will consist of a presentation and an opportunity to engage with the presenter. You will be invited to offer your questions and comments by text to a moderator who will then bring them into conversation with the presenter. A recording will be available after the live presentation for all registered participants.

The Reverend Dr. Liz Theoharis is Executive Director of the Kairos Center for Religions, Rights, and Social Justice at Union Theological Seminary and Co-Chair of the Poor People’s Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival. She is an ordained minister in the Presbyterian Church (USA) and teaches at Union Theological Seminary in New York City. Rev. Dr. Theoharis received her BA in Urban Studies from the University of Pennsylvania; her M.Div. from Union Theological Seminary in 2004 where she was the first William Sloane Coffin Scholar; and her PhD from Union in New Testament and Christian Origins.
